Multiple sclerosis or MS occurs when your body’s immune system attacks myelin, a fatty material that protects the nerves by wrapping around them. Without the layer of myelin, nerves might get damaged, resulting in the formation of scar tissue. Multiple sclerosis is a long-lasting disease. However, it can be managed with the help of some changes in eating habits.

Foods to avoid

1. Saturated fats
Saturated fats are bad for the body as they increase your LDL or bad cholesterol. High cholesterol can cause atherosclerosis which increases the chances of heart stroke or heart attack. Some of the common foods containing saturated fats that are harmful to MS patients include animal products such as red meat and other food ingredients like coconut oil and palm oil. Other conditions related to the heart, such as cardiovascular disease and hypertension, are also said to worsen the condition of MS.

2. Sodium
Sodium is considered one of the foods responsible for the relapse of MS, and the risk of the development of new lesions increases. Furthermore, more sodium also leads to increased blood pressure, which causes lesser life expectancy among people with MS. Daily salt consumption should be under 1500 mg for people with heart-related problems, and people with a healthy heart should consume no more than 2300 mg of salt in a day.

1. Fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants
Fresh fruits are best for people with MS because they provide numerous nutrients and contain antioxidants like polyphenols, carotenoids, and anthocyanins. Antioxidants help in stopping the progression of the disease because MS worsens with oxidative stress. Fruits also help if one is facing issues with digestion because of MS. Fruits have fiber content and thus increase motility. Likewise, vegetables are also rich in fiber and antioxidants, making them good foods for people with MS.

2. Turmeric
People with MS should consider including turmeric in their foods because of the anti-inflammatory properties of the spice. MS results in inflammation and scars the neural pathways, and turmeric can ease the inflammation. Turmeric contains curcumin which also has antioxidant properties. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of curcumin are so convincing that making it a part of the treatment of MS has also been suggested.

3. Fiber
Fibrous foods are best for people with MS as the body does not need to digest fiber entirely, and it can pass through the system. Therefore, it helps prevent constipation, which is one of the biggest concerns with MS. Some foods to consider for fiber content include brown rice, wheat bread, and whole grains. It is also suggested to drink enough water because fiber absorbs water.
