4. Alcohol

Ethanol in alcoholic drinks converts into migraine triggering chemicals. In addition, alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it can lead to dehydration. Dehydration can then lead to migraines. Alcohol also relaxes blood vessels, causing higher blood flow to the brain. The increased blood flow means that those who are susceptible to headaches can develop full migraines. Alcohol also contains histamine and causes the immune system to release more of this chemical. Histamine increases inflammation throughout the body, including the head.

5. Nitrates

Nitrates are compounds that occur naturally in some vegetables like broccoli, collard greens, and root vegetables. Naturally occurring nitrates are closely linked to the nitrates that food manufacturers use to preserve processed meat. Migraine sufferers are sensitive to nitrites. The body can convert nitrates to nitrites, and both substances increase the possibility of migraines. Nitrate rich foods increase nitric oxide, a gas that causes expansion of blood vessels, triggering migraines among sensitive individuals.
