7 Valuable Coins To Be On The Lookout For

There are always valuable coins around, but it’s important to know what you’re looking for, especially when it comes to being aware of the authenticity of the coins. The most valuable are a variety of gold coins and silver coins that are extremely rare with a limited amount in existence, but they will certainly earn you a significant amount of money if you happen to find one. Read on to learn about 7 valuable coins you should be on the lookout for:

1. Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle

If you’re an active collector of valuable coins, you’ve probably heard of Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. This coin is a gold coin featuring Lady Liberty standing with sun rays beaming behind her, holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, and on the other side an American eagle is in flight. In 2023, this coin could sell for up to over $20 million.

2. Flowing Silver Hair Dollar

Some believe the 1794 Flowing Silver Hair Dollar was the first silver dollar by the U.S. Mint. In 2013, this coin sold at an auction for a whopping $10 million. Less than 1800 were produced, and it is now believed that only 120 and 130 are still around, making the coin very rare. Keep an eye out for this coin—the front features Lady Liberty at a side profile with her hair flowing back and the flip side features an American eagle.

3. Fugio Cent

The Fugio Cent, although not quite as valuable as some other coins on this list, comes with an interesting story. It can sell for about a couple hundred dollars, making it certainly a more affordable and accessible coin to add to your collection. This coin was created for Benjamin Franklin and may have been the first coin circulated in the newly found United States. One side of the coin features a sundial with the word ‘fugio’ and the phrase “mind your own business” on the bottom, to tell people to pay attention to their own business affairs. The reverse side features 13 chain links, representing the first 13 states, and says “we are one.”

4. Brasher Doubloon

The Brasher Doubloon was created before the U.S. Mint was established in the late eighteenth century—seven Brasher Doubloons were created in total. Be sure to know what this coin is like so you can look for it; the front features a state seal and a rising sun, and the flip side features an American eagle with a shield. This coin is worth up to over $10 million today.

5. Edward III Florian

The 1343 Edward III Florian has survived for almost 6 centuries and is estimated to sell for upwards of $6 million. If you land your hands on one, you will have 1 of just 3 of these coins in the world. The front side of the coin shows King Edward III sitting on his throne with two leopard heads beside him (hence why this coin is sometimes called the Double Leopard). The reverse side displays the Royal Cross in quatrefoil.

6. Lincoln Head Copper Penny

The 1943 Lincoln Head Copper Penny was made during World War II and features a side profile of Abraham Lincoln on one side, and a description of ‘ONE CENT’ on the other. The reason this coin is so valuable is due to the fact that a certain batch of this coin was accidentally made with copper, where pennies were typically made with steel. It is estimated that 20-40 of these coins are still around. Be careful, though, as these coins are often counterfeited—use a magnet to see if it sticks, and if it does, it’s made of steel and inauthentic.

7. Canadian Gold Maple Leaf

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is a coin that won’t fit in your pocket as it weighs a whopping 220 pounds—it is featured in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest coin. It is currently one of the most sought out coins valued by collectors. Only 6 were created and the front features Queen Elizabeth II while the reverse shows a Canadian maple leaf. This coin is estimated to sell for over $5 million today.
